Matt Southgate Tour Professional

Matt as well as Richie McEvoy also joined Thorpe Hall as a cadet in January 1996 and had a very successful club career. As an amatuer, his biggest success was winning the 2010 St Andrews Links Trophy, his final round of 67 on the Old Course gave him victory by 5 shots.

After turning professional in 2011, Matt played on the Challenge Tour finishing second to Edourd Dubois in the Scottish Hydro Challenge Tour. From 2012 to 2015 he had little success but finished 6th in the 2015 European Tour Qualifying School at PGA Catalunya Resort to gain his European Tour card. His breakthrough came in the 2016 Irish Open where he finished fourth behind Rory McIlroy. He qualified for the Open Championship in 2016 finishing in joint 12th place at Royal Troon before going on to retain his tour card for 2017.

2017 was a brilliant year for Matt with a top ten finish in the Open Championship at Royal Birkdale where he finished 6th and a top 50 finish in the Race to Dubai.

2018 was another successful year for Matt, After a hand injury he started his season late but in June he finished 2nd to qualify for The US Open, the first son of Thorpe Hall to do so since amateur Sir Michael Bonallack in 1959. At the end of June he finished 5th at the French Open after recording a brilliant 65 for the final round. In July he played all four rounds in The Open Championship at Carnoustie finishing joint 67th. For the second year running he qualified for the Race To Dubai finishing in 57th place.

We wish Matt a very successful 2019.
